Advice from Paul · Gas Safe #221708

Why does my boiler keep turning off?

In short: A boiler that keeps cutting out is usually caused by low water pressure, trapped air, a stuck pump or diverter valve, a frozen condensate pipe in cold weather, or the boiler overheating and shutting down on safety.

A boiler that fires up then shuts off a few minutes later, again and again, is a classic sign that something is not right, and it is the boiler protecting itself rather than plodding on and causing damage. There are a few usual suspects, and some are cheap fixes.

Here is what most often causes it, from an engineer’s point of view, with the safe checks you can do before calling out and the ones that need a Gas Safe registered engineer.

The most common causes

Boilers cut out for safety, so the trick is finding what is triggering it.

  1. 01

    Low pressure

If the pressure gauge is below about 1 bar, the boiler may fire and then cut out. Topping up can help, but if the pressure keeps falling you have a leak that needs finding.

  2. 02

    A frozen condensate pipe

In cold snaps, the plastic condensate pipe (often running outside) can freeze and block, which makes many boilers lock out. This is one of the most common winter callouts, and sometimes it can be safely thawed.

  3. 03

    Air or a stuck pump

Trapped air or a tired pump stops the boiler moving heat around, so it overheats and shuts down. This needs an engineer to bleed, free or replace the part.

  4. 04

    A stuck diverter valve

On a combi, a sticking diverter valve can confuse the boiler and cause short cycling. Again, a job for an engineer.

When to call an engineer

If it is not low pressure or a frozen condensate pipe you can safely thaw, the cause is inside the system, air, the pump, a valve or a sensor, and needs a Gas Safe registered engineer to diagnose properly.

Do not keep resetting a boiler that cuts out repeatedly. It is telling you something is wrong, and the sooner it is looked at, the smaller the job usually is.

Straight answers

Common questions

Why does my boiler cut out after a few minutes?

Short cycling like that is usually low pressure, trapped air, a stuck pump or diverter valve, or the boiler overheating and shutting down on safety. An engineer can pin down which.

Can a frozen pipe stop my boiler?

Yes. In cold weather the condensate pipe can freeze and block, which locks many boilers out. It is one of the most common winter faults, and sometimes it can be safely thawed.

Is it safe to keep using a boiler that keeps turning off?

It is protecting itself, so do not keep forcing it with resets. Get it looked at, because the underlying fault will not fix itself and can get worse.
