A wet room looks simple, an open, level, walk-in shower area, but it is the job where getting the hidden work wrong costs the most. If the floor is not graded to the drain and the whole area is not tanked (waterproofed) properly, water goes under the floor and into the rooms below. Paul does the boring, critical bits right.

From the falls in the floor to the tanking membrane, the drainage and the fit, Paul builds wet rooms that stay watertight for the long haul. High-ticket, yes, but it is not a job to hand to someone who "has a go", and after 40 years there is very little Paul has not built.

Getting it watertight

The hidden work is the job

  1. 01

    Grading and drainage

The floor is formed so it falls gently to the drain, so water runs away instead of pooling. Get this wrong and no amount of tiling saves it.

  2. 02

    Tanked properly

The floor and walls in the wet zone are tanked with a waterproof membrane before tiling, so water can never get into the structure. This is the step cheap jobs skip.

  3. 03

    Fitted and tested

Drain, screen, shower and controls fitted, then the whole thing tested so you know it drains and holds water where it should before it gets used.

No surprises

What a proper wet room needs

  • A floor correctly graded to the drain
  • Full tanking / waterproofing of the wet zone
  • A drain sized and fitted to cope with the flow
  • Thermostatic shower and controls fitted safely
  • Glass screen or walk-in panel fitted solid
  • The whole area tested watertight before use

A typical job

A typical wet room

A family wants to lose the bath and go for an open walk-in wet room. Paul forms the floor with the right falls to the drain, tanks the floor and lower walls properly, fits the drain, thermostatic shower and screen, and water-tests it before the tiler finishes. A clean, modern wet room that will not leak into the ceiling below.

A fair fixed price, agreed with Paul before he starts. No call-out fee bolted on the end, no hidden extras. If a job turns out bigger than it looked, he stops and tells you first.

Straight answers

Wet room installation questions, answered

Why do wet rooms leak?

Almost always because the floor was not graded to the drain or the area was not tanked properly before tiling. Both are hidden jobs, which is exactly why they get skimped. Paul does not skip them.

Can any bathroom become a wet room?

Most can, but it depends on the floor build-up and where the drainage can run. Paul assesses your room honestly and tells you if it is straightforward or needs extra work.

Is a wet room a good idea for accessibility?

Yes, a level walk-in wet room with no step is one of the best options for mobility. See the accessible bathrooms page for more on that.
