An immersion heater is the electric element that heats the water in a hot water cylinder, either as the main hot water or as a backup to the boiler. When it fails you get no hot water from the tank, or it never gets properly hot, and a stuck thermostat can send your electricity bill through the roof by heating constantly.

What is an immersion heater?
